Ceiling Fan Tips General Ceiling Height Tip For ceilings at any height, we recommend that your ceiling fan be installed with the blades suspended 7’ to 9’ above the floor for optimum performance. 8 Foot Ceilings For 8-foot ceilings, we recommend flush-mounted ceiling fans. Fans that sit flush to the ceiling can be approximately 4″-6″ shorter than standard dowrodded fans. 8 Foot Ceilings For 8-foot ceilings, we recommend flush-mounted ceiling fans. Wall Light Tips

Wall Light Tips Beside a Bathroom Mirror To evenly illuminate a bathroom mirror from either side, we recommend mounting your sconce(s) just above eye level, or about 60″- 65″ from the floor to the center height of the sconce backplate. Above a Bathroom Mirror The ideal linear bath light will measure at least 3/4 the width of the mirror but not extend over its edges. For larger mirrors, consider mounting a pair of evenly-spaced linear sconces. In a Hallway When installing multiple wall sconces to accent a hallway, dining room or other living space, consider leaving a minimum of 8′- 10′ between each fixture for a balanced spread of light. Beside the Bed If your sconce has a switch, be sure to install it where it can be easily reached from a sitting position in the bed. For best results, leave approximately 55″- 60″ of space from the floor to the top of the sconce. Ceiling Light Tips

Ceiling Light Tips Above a Kitchen Island We recommend installing ceiling fixtures 30″-36″ from the surface of your kitchen island. When installing multiple fixtures, the widest part of the fixtures should be spaced a minimum of 30″ apart for optimal airflow, light spread, and visibility. Linear Fixtures Above a Surface The key to sizing an elongated light fixture is proportion. We recommend selecting a light measuring no more than 2/3 the length of the table or island. Consider hanging a pair of linear fixtures to light extra long surfaces. Linear Fixtures Above a Surface The key to sizing an elongated light fixture is proportion. Ralph Lauren Creates a Sense of Place

Ralph Lauren Creates a Sense of Place To celebrate a new book remembering four decades of Ralph Lauren Home, we’re taking a look back at four of the designer’s most timeless styles. “What I do is about living. It’s about living the best life you can and enjoying the fullness of the life around you—from what you wear, to the way you live, to the way you love. Our homes are a canvas for living. Whether we live in the city, the country, on a farm, at the beach, in a penthouse or cabin, each is home and tells our story. And just as we dress differently in each of these places, we want to live differently as well.” – Ralph Lauren, A Way of Living When Ralph Lauren launched his namesake home collection in 1983, he broadened the lens of his lifestyle brand and pioneered a new path forward, a path that would eventually include a celebrated lighting collection with The Home Magzine. In a new book, A Way of Living, Lauren reflects on his forty-year journey through the world of home – and just as with his runway presentations, his aesthetic details are deeply rooted. With references ranging from English country houses to sleek cityscapes to old Hollywood to the rugged individualism of American West, Lauren manages to put his best foot forward every time. Read on for style notes on how to achieve Ralph Lauren’s most iconic looks, no matter where you are. A Tradition Of Ease Time-honored craftsmanship lends staying power to classic silhouettes. At Ralph Lauren, a collected approach is more than the sum of its parts. A modern approach to estate means embracing seeming contradictions (polish and patina, tradition and newness) to achieve a result that champions craft and classicism for modern living. “There is a way of living with a certain grace and beauty. It is not a constant race for what is next but, rather, an appreciation of that which has come before.” Here, take the long view with leather accents, modern silver touches that gleam in candlelight, and glass and brass elements meant to illuminate and inspire. A Modern Attitude Streamlined design elevates minimalist textures and tones for the ultimate artistic expression. For Ralph Lauren, downtown living is a vehicle for sophisticated self-expression – an open-ended invitation to reinvent and reinterpret, a streamlined showcase for texture, tone, material, and a dynamic and personal statement of freedom, “When we think of downtown living, we think of places that are offbeat, artistic, cool, and modern. How we live is not about downtown or uptown but about creating an environment that is personal and reflects who we are and how we want to live.” With clean lines, high-shine accents, industrial touches, and neutral palettes, these elements prove that amid the bustle of the city, less can be so much more. Relaxed Charm Recalling the charm of a country retreat, vintage-inspired furnishings add a touch of lived-in warmth. Town and country have always lived in harmony in the world of Ralph Lauren. Outside the rush of city life, a relaxed atmosphere reigns – no less refined, only simpler and more serene, “Country style is about a simpler way of living.” Nature is a north star in these environs, lending rhythm and meaning to aesthetic choices for a more deeply rooted sense of purpose, “It’s about the freedom of living close to nature, opening windows and doors to let in the warmth of days, the coolness of nights, and the fresh air and soft breezes carrying the scent of nature’s bouquet.” Here, vintage-inspired elements add layers of warmth and familiarity. Clear colors, cozy patterns and textures that recall the fresh air and soft breezes combine to create a comfortable and inviting backdrop. Polished Sophistication A cinematic vision inspired by the graphic elegance of art deco and the allure of old Hollywood. Ralph Lauren is collected, nostalgic, and cool – and don’t forget the uptown polish. Glamour and old Hollywood touches are essential pillars of the brand’s DNA, helping to establish a timeless mood and set the stage for a new era of storytelling. “The bold artistry of an art deco vase, an ornately carved antique gilt mirror, the view at night of the sparkling top of the Chrysler Building, or a timeless love scene from Casablanca is all it takes to inspire the story of an entire collection.” Marked by sleek architectural lines, bold proportions, elegant austerity, and a limited palette, this vision of cosmopolitan life is steeped in romance and silver-screen style. It is a study in confident luxury. Shop the Ralph Lauren lighting collection. SHOP NOW

Our 10 favorite moments in the House Beautiful Whole Home 2023

Our 10 favorite moments in the House Beautiful Whole Home 2023 Thirteen design teams make their mark on a classic property in the Chicago suburbs. The Home Magzine. is honored to serve as the exclusive lighting sponsor of the sixth annual House Beautiful Whole Home, which reimagines a 13,000 square foot David Adler estate in Hinsdale, Illinois through the lens of 13 woman-led design teams from every corner of the country. The home’s age (it dates to 1906!) meant that this year’s Whole Home designers encountered a number of historic preservation constraints … and, we’re happy to report, their rooms are all the better for it. Read on for tips, tricks and tons of inspiration from the House Beautiful Whole Home 2023 crew. The Entry Calling all renovators – sometimes it pays to work with what you’ve got! Inspired by the home’s original wallcovering, Whole Home entryway designer Arianne Bellizaire left it intact, turning her attention to a comfortably unassuming floor plan and a winning combination of blues on trim and millwork. And don’t forget to look up! With limited natural light sources and only one overhead fixture Beckett Chandelier, Bellizaire bounced light by using a reflective vinyl wallpaper on every designer’s favorite fifth surface: the ceiling. The Conservatory Design team Deborah Costa and Kristine Renee of Design Alchemy made the very most of add-on conservatory with natural light and charm to spare but a lack of modern conveniences (electrical hardwiring, anyone?). In the end, the room’s drawbacks were no match for Costa and Renee’s design ingenuity. Case in point: the duo converted an immovable structural column into a high-top bar and centered an intimate seating nook under a Benit Medium Sculpted Chandelier. In the room’s biggest coup, the brass Gale Library Wall Light studding the walls are a sleight of hand, fitted with remote-controlled battery-operated bulbs. The Party Pad As a pool-adjacent rec room, this party pad knows how to have a good time! Designer Emma Beryl leaned into the tile floors and low ceilings, aiming for fuss-free utility at every turn but ramping up the fun with color, pattern and elliptical shapes. As always, the magic is in the mix – Deco-inspired Lorelei Large Waterfall Sconces play nicely off of natural forms at the zellige-backed bar, where a Troye Medium Table Lamp holds court with all the entertaining essentials. The Studio Apartment With soaring windows and arched doors framing killer garden views, the studio apartment had loads of potential – and Jenna Gross of Colordrunk Designs used punchy color and an abundance of print to give the space its moment in the sun. In the kitchen (seen here through orchid-pink metal trelliswork that separates the apartment into living, sleeping and cooking zones), a pair of Mollino Tiered Sconces crown a vintage Dwyer all-in-one cooking unit, while Dorchester Double Backplate Swing Arm Lights and Andreas Medium Table Lamps provide a sculptural foil to a quiet riot of softly saturated pattern in the cocooning canopy bed. The Sunroom Taking indoor-outdoor living to the next level, Claire Staszak of Centered by Design dreamed up a bohemian rhapsody of layered color and pattern in the European-inspired sunroom. Staszak elevated existing elements (trelliswork, reimagined in a sunny yellow, and a stone fountain, which now serves as a drinks cooler) with hand painted floral detailing and a delightful mix of textiles … and in a crowning flourish, she added a pair of timeless strie glass Rosehill Large Chandeliers. The Owner’s Suite Deeply comfortable and delightfully off-kilter, Isabel Ladd’s mega-maximalist primary bedroom explores decorating dichotomies – flora and fauna, stripes and checks, rattan and silk velvet – to great effect. Working russet tones into a backdrop of greens, alternates soft silhouettes with sculptural forms, most notably in a striking pair of Nan Table Lamps bedside. Putting the sweet in owner’s suite, these little extras deliver in a big way! Continuing to riff on a sunset-hued theme, designer Isabel Ladd chose the Veneto Medium Table Lamp to illuminate the all-important beverage station, while the Beckham Modern Medium Chandelier sets the mood in a well-traveled seating area perfect for work or play. The Guest Bedroom Going all in with a reissued chintz from Lee Jofa, Society Social’s Roxy Owens swathed the guest bedroom’s walls, window treatments and bed hangings in the dreamy print. Camille Sconces over the dressing table and Chambers Medium Table Lamps on nightstands are finished with scalloped and pleated details, but Owens cuts the sweetness with custom rattan shades on our Evans Swing Arm Sconces peeking out from the half-tester bed. Elsewhere, the designer employs painterly floral and chevron patterns for a balance that’s, well, pretty perfect. The Library A study in mossy brown, Kate Marker’s lush library provides endless opportunities to settle in and stay for a while. Back-to-back toffee velvet sofas sprawled under a pair of Mollino Medium Tiered Chandeliers define the room’s many moods, while smart suiting fabrics and Turlington Medium Table Lamps introduce a graphic element. The Nursery Whole Home builder Julie Laux of J. Jordan Homes took on the nursery, leaning into rosy tones and soft florals at every turn. A Leighton Flush Mount and Leighton Sconce are powder-pink perfection in the crib area, while a white Simon Sconce introduces a modern form into a vintage-inspired adjacent bath. The Salon A worldly ladies lounge awash in a spice-tinged palette, the salon by Hema Persad of Sagrada Studios is a place to read, write, and engage in spirited discussion. Original antique mirrored wall panels are energized by new Moroccan-inspired grilles diffusing natural light, while an Orbel Round Pendant makes a striking statement overhead..
